The Vesoul-Vaivre lake
West of the town, Vesoul-Vaivre lake unrolls its eight-hundred-hectare loop, where you walk, cycle, paddle board or rollerblade. Listed as a regional nature reserve for its wildlife, it shelters herons, grebes and dragonflies. A picnic on the banks, a bike ride around, a rowing boat rented at the pontoon: so many nature-date ideas just outside town. The people of Vesoul gather here as soon as the sun comes out.
La Motte hill
Above the town, La Motte hill rises nearly a hundred metres and is crowned by a 19th-century chapel, a Marian pilgrimage site. You climb up on foot from the centre along a path that winds between vines, hedges and old stones. From the top, the view embraces the whole Durgeon valley and the silhouette of the old town. A date set at the summit, in the golden hour, slips easily into lasting memory.
Old town and cultural stage
In the centre, Place du Grand-Puits, cobbled and framed by old houses, is the pedestrian heart of the old town. The Hôtel de Thomassin, the Georges Garret museum and Saint-Georges church punctuate the walk. Every February, the International Asian Film Festival, founded in 1995, turns Vesoul into a cinephile’s rendez-vous. On Lyad, people from Vesoul share their paths and favourite venues; it is up to you to find someone to push the door with.
